Islamic Vessels: Rulings and Guidelines

Islamic Rulings on Vessels

A guide to understanding what vessels are permitted or prohibited for Muslims to use, and rulings on their repair.

Can Gold and Silver Vessels be Used?

Vessels are typically made from various materials such as clay, iron, copper, brass, gold, silver, and other minerals and stones. Among these, the vessels that are prohibited for Muslims are:

  • Gold vessels
  • Silver vessels

Whether for eating or other uses, both gold and silver vessels are forbidden (haram) for Muslims.

Evidence for the Prohibition of Using Gold and Silver Vessels:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not wear silk clothes, and do not drink from gold and silver vessels, and do not eat from their plates. These things are for them (the disbelievers) in this world, and for us (the Muslims) in the Hereafter."

Books: Bukhari and Muslim

We have seen the hadith regarding the prohibition of using gold and silver vessels. If, in a critical situation, there is absolutely nothing else available to use, then it is permissible to use them temporarily out of necessity. However, once other vessels become available, it becomes haram (forbidden) to continue using the gold and silver ones.

The Ruling on Repairing Cracks in Vessels with Gold and Silver

01. Using Gold

It is not permissible to repair any vessel with gold, whether the crack is small or large. Doing so is haram (forbidden).

02. Using Silver

There are three scenarios regarding repairing a vessel with silver:

  • Small Crack: If the crack is small and there is no intention of beautification, it is permissible to repair it.
  • Large Crack (for Beautification): If the crack is large and it is repaired with silver for the purpose of beautification, it is haram.
  • Large Crack (for Necessity) or Small Crack (for Beautification): If the crack is large and it is repaired out of necessity, or if the crack is small and it is repaired for beautification, in both these cases, repairing it with silver is makruh (discouraged).

Evidence for Repairing Vessel Cracks with Silver:

I saw the Prophet's (peace be upon him) drinking cup with Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). A crack in it had been repaired with silver. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I have given the Prophet (peace be upon him) much water to drink from this cup."

03. The Ruling on Using Vessels Made of Copper, Pearl, Emerald, etc.

There is no restriction on using vessels made of copper, pearl, ruby, emerald, or similar materials. There is no evidence to suggest that it is haram. Therefore, it is permissible to use vessels made from these materials.

04. The Ruling on Using Vessels Belonging to Non-Muslims

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the vessels of non-Muslims, he said, "Wash them and then eat from them." Therefore, if there are vessels belonging to non-Muslims, they must first be washed. Secondly, after washing them, it is permissible for us to eat food from them.
